Carcass quality, parts and tissue development of lambs finished in three systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Hashimoto,Juliano Hideo; Osório,José Carlos da Silveira; Osório,Maria Teresa Moreira; Bonacina,Marlice Salete; Lehmen,Rosilene Inês; Pedroso,Carlos Eduardo da Silva.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of finishing systems on natural pasture and gender on the carcass quality, parts and tissue development of lambs. Forty-five non-castrated males and forty-five females were distributed in a completely randomized design into three treatments: lamb with mother kept on pasture; weaned lamb kept on pasture and weaned lamb kept on pasture with supplementation (soybean hulls at 1% of body weight). The criteria for slaughter was body condition score (2.0 - 3.0). The carcass characteristics and parts composition were influenced by the sex. The finishing system with supplementation promoted greater carcass yield and longer leg length. The tissue composition was different only for the sex, with the males...

Discrimination ability of Santa Inês and crossbred Santa Inês × Dorper lamb heavy carcasses by the Brazilian and European classification systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Lima,Alyne Cristina Sodré; Sousa,Marco Antonio Paula de; Araújo,Jonas Carneiro; Nunes,Manuella Paula de Mesquita; Morais,Eziquiel de; Andrade,Stefano Juliano Tavares de; Chaves,Luciara Celi da Silva; Silva,André Guimarães Maciel e.
ABSTRACT The ability of discriminating carcass characteristics of different fat cover scores of heavy carcasses, according to the European (EUS) and Brazilian (BRS) classification systems, was assessed. Fifty-six lambs, weighing between 26.25 and 46.15 kg, of the Santa Inês and crossbred Santa Inês × Dorper genetic groups were evaluated. The level of adiposity was assessed through color photography of the carcasses after refrigeration according to the EUS and BRS. The carcasses were assigned to four groups by cluster analysis according to 25 variables, namely, cold carcass weight; muscle; bone; fat; and muscle:fat and fat:bone ratios of the carcass and cuts (hindquarter, shoulder, back); kidney, pelvic, and inguinal fat; and subcutaneous fat thickness. Of...

Effect of diet and genotype on carcass characteristics of feedlot hair sheep R. Bras. Zootec.
Costa,Roberto Germano; Araújo Filho,José Teodorico de; Sousa,Wandrick Hauss de; Gonzaga Neto,Severino; Madruga,Marta Suely; Fraga,Angelina Bossi.
Itwas evaluated qualitative characteristics of confined hair sheep submitted to diets with two energy levels. Eighteen lambs from each genotype were used: Morada Nova, Santa Inez and Dorpper x Santa Inez crossbreds. The rations with the lowest and the highest energy level were made up with 2.5 and 2.94 Mcal EM/kg DM, respectively. It was evaluated conformation and finishing carcass, in addition to leg tissue composition. The score for conformation was significantly higher for animals kept in diet with the highest energy level and for Dorpper x Santa Inês crossbreds. Animals from Santa Inez and from Dorpper x Santa Inez breeds showed score for meat color close to red class, while Morada Nova genotype was close to slightly dark red. The muscle:bone ratio for...

Effect of frame size on performance and carcass traits of Santa Inês lambs finished in a feedlot R. Bras. Zootec.
Souza Júnior,Edmilson Lúcio de; Sousa,Wandrick Hauss de; Pimenta Filho,Edgard Cavalcanti; Gonzaga Neto,Severino; Cartaxo,Felipe Queiroga; Cezar,Marcílio Fontes; Cunha,Maria das Graças Gomes; Pereira Filho,José Morais.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance, qualitative, morphometric and quantitative carcass traits of Santa Inês lambs of different frame sizes finished in a feedlot. Twenty 120-day-old intact lambs with a 25.0±3.1 kg average body weight at the beginning of the experiment were used. Lambs received a diet containing 17% crude protein and 2.70 Mcal/kg dry matter. Frame size influenced performance and tissue composition in the carcasses of the lambs. Lambs with large frame sizes showed better carcass conformation compared with those of medium-sized frames. Frame size was found to have a significant effect on rump perimeter. Large-framed lambs showed higher compactness on the carcass index and carcass dressing area compared with...

Multivariate relationship among body protein, fat, and macrominerals of male and female Saanen goats using canonical correlation analysis R. Bras. Zootec.
Vargas,Julián Andrés Castillo; Almeida,Amélia Katiane; Härter,Carla Joice; Souza,Anaiane Pereira; Fernandes,Márcia Helena Machado da Rocha; Resende,Kléber Tomás de; Teixeira,Izabelle Auxiliadora Molina de Almeida.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to investigate the multivariate relationship among body protein, fat, and macrominerals in Saanen goats of different sexes (castrated males, females, and intact males) using canonical correlation analysis. Individual records of 274 Saanen goats combined from 10 studies was used. Two sets of body constituents were established: the first one contained variables related to body protein or fat (canonical variate U) and the second contained variables related to body calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, or potassium (canonical variate V). Two canonical pairs were identified for each sex. However, irrespective of sex, first canonical pairs accounted for more than 87% of variance of the dependent variables, these only...

Residual intake and gain for the evaluation of performance, non-carcass components, and carcass characteristics of confined crossbred Texel lambs R. Bras. Zootec.
Carneiro,Mayara Mitiko Yoshihara; Morais,Maria da Graça; Souza,Andréa Roberto Duarte Lopes; Fernandes,Henrique Jorge; Feijó,Gelson Luís Dias; Bonin,Marina de Nadai; Franco,Gumercindo Loriano; Rocha,Raizza Fátima Abadia Tulux.
ABSTRACT We evaluated performance, non-carcass components, and carcass characteristics of crossbred Texel lambs in different categories of residual intake and gain (RIG). We assessed 77 crossbred (¼ Pantaneira and ¾ Texel) non-castrated animals in two study phases. The first phase included 47 lambs with an initial average weight of 29.9±5.5 kg, and the second phase included 30 lambs with initial average weight of 22.4±3.3 kg. Dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) were evaluated for 70 days. Animals were divided into three groups in terms of efficiency: efficient (high RIG), intermediate (medium RIG), or inefficient (low RIG), based on the standard deviation of the mean for the RIG variable. We measured the yield of non-carcass components,...
